What is prostate cancer?

Prostate cancer is the most common cancer in men. Prostate cancer can develop when cells start to grow in an uncontrolled way.

In most cases, prostate cancer often grows slowly and it may stay undiagnosed because it never causes any symptoms.

However, it sometimes causes symptoms such as:
  • Difficulty or pain in passing urine
  • Having to rush to the toilet to pass urine
  • Frequent visits to the toilet, especially at night
  • Difficulty starting and stopping urine
  • Dribbling urine
  • Difficulty in having an erection
  • Blood in urine/semen
  • A feeling of not having emptied the bladder fully
If the cancer has spreads to the bones, deep bone pain, especially of the lower back/hips, may be experienced.

What is the prostate gland?

Only men have a prostate gland. The prostate lies underneath the bladder and surrounds the tube that men pass urine and semen through (urethra).

The prostate gland’s main job is to make some of the fluid that carries sperm, called semen.

The three most common prostate problems are:
  • Prostate cancer
  • An enlarged prostate-benign prostatic enlargement (BPE) or benign prostatic hyperplasia (BPH)
  • An inflammation or infection in the prostate, called prostatitis

What are the causes of prostate cancer?

Nobody is really sure of what is the specific causes are. The primary risk factors are age, genetics and hormone levels.

Some studies have shown that obese men and men who have diabetes have higher risk of developing prostate cancer.
